Maybe it was the lusty mannequins in its stores, the massage oil on its shelves or the overabundance of cleavage on the glittery runway of its annual TV fashion show. But yesterday, Victoria's Secret chief executive Sharen J. Turney acknowledged that the chain had gotten "too sexy."
Is such a thing even possible?
"We have moved off of our brand heritage," she said in a conference call with analysts. "We use the word 'sexy' a lot and really have forgotten the ultra-feminine."
Victoria's Secret has long toed the line between seductive and sleazy, and its recent disappointing financial performance suggested that it had veered off course. Its parent company, Limited Brands, reported Wednesday that Victoria's Secret's fourth-quarter revenue rose to $1.89 billion. But sales at stores open at least a year, a key measure of a retailer's health, declined 8 percent. The company also said it will slow plans for new stores and remodels. The chain has about 1,000 stores, mostly in the United States.

Victoria's Secret is trying to recalibrate. Fourth-quarter sales of fragrance and the collegiate-inspired Pink label grew, but sales of bras, panties and beauty products declined. Turney said the company will aim its marketing and merchandise at 26-year-olds, holding extensive focus groups and walking through malls with them. The company did similar research when it launched Pink, which has become a staple in dorm rooms.
Turney pointed to the company's Super Bowl ad this year as an example of its new direction. The spot featured model Adriana Lima in a black lace tank top and undies seductively tossing a football as she lounged in a chair.
"Let the real games begin," the ad said. It was the most popular spot on the broadcast and was seen by 103.7 million people, according to the Nielsen Co. Its fashion show last year on CBS featuring models wearing angel wings and little else drew 7.5 million people, down from its 2001 debut on ABC with 12.4 million viewers.
So it sounds like VS is going back to a classier and more feminine style (more like old-school VS, for those of us who remember it). I also heard they are trying to re-invent the fashion show and make it more like the 2003 show.
Personally I feel VS has been going somewhat downhill over the past few years. Most of us seem to agree that the 2006 and 2007 shows didn't match up to the 2003 and 2005 shows, and their catalogs have seen a steady decline in quality, basically getting more and more cheesy-looking, skanky make-up and styling sprinkled with cute puppies and lollipops.
Now it seems VS has realized this and is planning a change for the better. Interesting.

Amen Finally some good news about VS. I am not happy with their development during the past two years. I just doubt that they will really change something but...well... lets give em a try
My advice: less over-the-top runway stuff more artistic photo shoots instead of we're- using-all-colors-of-the-rainbow-for-the-pics-stuff less of Marisa she is great in SI though reduce the number of angels
my guess is that they will go back to simple bra and panties. they'll forget about the wings, the christmas trees(i lookin at you Selita!), and go back to a more conservative look.

mmmmm no, I don't think they will forget wings and xmas trees, check the 2003 video, u will find all
What I think they will do is that will be again a fashion show and not a bad overlenght commercial
(hey!, have the people of VS read our complains about the show? lolololol because is what most of the people have said: the return to a fashion show!!)

seems finally VS decided to stop their exaggeration
the point of superbowl ad is important, 103 million ppl watched a "normal" lingerie commercial bt 7.5-10 million average always watches an entertainment show yearly. firstly they have to change their "Victoria's Secret Entertainment Show". as I said b4, exaggerated outfits don't take attention of everyone.
yeah, they should reduce the angels. Adriana, Ale, KK and Miranda is enough. actually I always wanted to see Adri, Laetitia, Petra and Ale as the angels bt... at the moment it's just a dream unfortunately
furthermore, I prefer to see photos in the catalogues including nature and environment such as SI does. oiled skins, black effects, hot colors in order to show the models sexy idea has bored. I know several friends who complain about not looking extremely sexy after wearing VS products lololol
